The DeepWave Consortium is an industry funded research consortium at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), which focuses on the application of machine (deep) learning numerical algorithms to wave-equation-based processing, imaging, and inversion. The application of these techniques extends to objectives ranging from the global Earth discovery to natural resources exploration, to subsurface monitoring as well as nondestructive testing and medical imaging. Industries working on these objectives will benefit from the research conducted in the Consortium if they decide to join it. The Consortium fosters research that is somewhat guided by real life problems and its activities are inspired by the continuous feedback of the participating sponsors.

The Consortium is supported by a group of Consortium members (see the updated list on the "Sponsors" page), each contributing funds to support its activities. This membership is designed to foster collaboration between academia and industry. Members enjoy a wide range of benefits, including invitations to all Consortium meetings, access to research reports and stable codes, opportunities to support Ph.D. student’s research, and facilitated engagement with graduate students for internship placements.

Consortium Industry Partners

Considering the investigators’ background and experience, our natural objective is to serve the Energy sector and more specifically those organizations that currently leverage remote sensing tools to image the subsurface. By improving on the accuracy of such imaging products, these organizations could have more effective drilling strategies for in the context of resource exploitation as well as for injection and monitoring of CO2 in the context of carbon capture and storage. This will in turn provide a reduction in cost and environmental hazards. We believe that our ideas and plans align with both their current interests and future directions.

For more information on the consortium’s research directions, visit the "Research" page on this site.

Benefits joining as a Sponsor

Participation in Annual Meetings

The Consortium will maintain communication, interaction and exchanges with its members,
and such interactions can be summarized in the following:

  • The consortium organizes a hybrid format, 2-day Mid-year meeting for the sponsors once a year. This meeting is scheduled in February/March and culminates with a business session during which sponsor have the chance to share feedback and suggestions.
  • The Annual Meeting is hosted in an in-person, 2-day format for the sponsors once a year and will coincide with a major Conference in Summer/Fall. This meeting also culminates with a business session.
  • Access to all event material comprising of video recordings with slides.

Dissemination of Reports and Codes

We structure our research to promote technology transfer by sharing codes and data on GitHub. Both codes and project reports are accessible through credential-based authentication, which can be obtained by contacting the Consortium support team. Codes associated with research later published in journals are made publicly available upon the publication of the abstract.

Mentorship/Internship opportunities

We welcome interactions between our group members (researchers and Ph.D. and MS students) and industry professionals towards navigating research objectives. This can be handled through various channels of communication, including direct emails, virtual meetings, as well as physical ones through visits by our sponsors to KAUST, or internship opportunities that the sponsors may make available.
